Skin Essentials - FAQ

Skin Essentials - FAQ

Q: "I take good care of my skin.  Do I still need to see an aesthetician?"

A: Yes. Aestheticians have tools and products that only professional skin care specialists employ. These allow for deep cleansing and exfoliation that most people cannot accomplish at home.

Q: "Why is exfoliation so important?"

A: Skin is produced from the epidermal layer, which is located beneath the dermis – the part of the skin that we see.  That top layer is primarily composed of dead skin cells. Sebum is produced by the oil glands and excreted by the skin.  Dirt, debris, pollution and free radicals settle on the skin and stick to the sebum.  This can clog the pores, altering the skin’s ability to breathe.  The dead skin cells joined with other foreign matter will cause the skin to lose vitality and look dull.  This clogging can inhibit the skin’s natural ability to maintain itself and therefore permit disease to enter the body.

Q: "How often do I need to have a facial?"

A: Generally, it is recommended to have a thorough cleaning and exfoliation every six to ten weeks, depending on your skin type.

Q: "I have oily skin.  Should I try to dry it out?

A: No!  If you have oily skin (larger pores and more sebum), when you purposely dry out your skin, your skin will create more oil to compensate for the loss.

Q: "I have acne.  I use a scrub every day.  Is that good?"

A: Not really.  The scrub stimulates the oil glands and that can cause the production of more oil.  Secondly, if there are bacteria present, moving the scrub around the face will spread them.  Worse even, if the scrub is too sharp and/or not pH balanced, it will cause tiny abrasions through which the bacteria may invade the skin, aided by the disturbance of the skin’s natural defense: the acid mantle.

Q: "I have specific questions about my skin.  What can I do?"

A: You have several choices.  You can contact Skin Essentials by phone, or post your question at the Living Well Forum under "Ask The Practitioner,"
